Row in a Gig

30 August @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am
A group of people rowing a red boat in clear blue-green water, with sailboats and rocky green islands in the background under a bright blue sky.

Hop across from Bryher and have a go at one of Scilly’s great island traditions with Tresco & Bryher Gig Club.

Pilot gig racing has been part of life on Scilly for generations – and this is your chance to take a seat in one of these beautiful wooden boats and try it for yourself.

Join members of Tresco & Bryher Gig Club at New Grimsby, where they’ll introduce you to the gigs, show you the basics and take you out for a row around the harbour and the sheltered waters between our two islands.

You might find yourself aboard Tryher, Emperor or even Czar – the club’s historic gig built in 1879 and still very much part of island life today.

No experience is needed, and everyone is welcome. Lifejackets are available and are essential for those under 16.

Ocean Scilly Session

Sunday 30th August 2026
9.30am – 11am
New Grimsby, Tresco

Suggested donation: £5, helping to support Tresco & Bryher Gig Club.

Coming Across from Bryher

It’s only a short hop across the channel to New Grimsby, so check the daily inter-island boat times and plan your crossing to arrive in good time for the session.

Afterwards, stay for a coffee, lunch or a wander around Tresco before catching the boat home – having experienced one of the traditions that has connected these islands for generations.
